What brown noise actually is

First, a fact that surprises everyone: brown noise has nothing to do with the color brown. It's named after Robert Brown, the botanist who discovered Brownian motion — the random-walk movement of particles in fluid.   • There are no direct clinical trials of brown noise for sleep. Zero. Its popularity runs on acoustics (the masking logic above) plus massive anecdotal consensus, particularly from the ADHD and tinnitus communities, who report the low rumble quiets mental chatter better than brighter noise colors. Plausible, not proven.

  • Brown noise doesn't "heal" anything. It won't fix insomnia, cure anxiety, or replace treatment. If you're waking at 3–4 AM every night or exhausted despite 8 hours, noise masking is a bandage at best — those have specific causes worth fixing.

Who brown noise is actually best for

  • People masking low-frequency noise. Traffic rumble, a partner's snoring, upstairs-neighbor footsteps, building HVAC — these live in the same frequencies as brown noise, which makes brown the most efficient masker for them.
